Chemical vs Mineral SPF: An Honest, Science-Based Comparison
How Each Works
Mineral (physical) sunscreens — zinc oxide and titanium dioxide — sit on top of the skin and scatter/reflect UV photons. They begin working immediately on application.
Chemical sunscreens — avobenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene, tinosorb, etc. — absorb UV energy and convert it to heat, which is dissipated from the skin. They require 15–20 minutes to bind to skin before they're fully effective.
The Absorption Question
In 2019–2020, the FDA conducted studies showing that certain chemical filters — specifically avobenzone, oxybenzone, octocrylene, and ecamsule — were detected in blood plasma after topical application.
This alarmed consumers. The key context they missed:
- Detection does not equal harm. Caffeine, vitamins, and hundreds of other safe compounds are detectable in blood after topical application.
- The FDA's position is still that sunscreen use is essential and the cardiovascular/cancer risk of UV exposure vastly outweighs theoretical risks from chemical filter absorption.
- Oxybenzone is the most controversial. If concerned, it's easy to avoid — many modern formulas have phased it out.

White Cast Reality
Micronised and nano-sized zinc oxide has dramatically reduced white cast in modern mineral formulas. Tinted versions eliminate it further by adding iron oxides.
Iron oxides also provide protection against visible light, which contributes to hyperpigmentation — making tinted mineral SPF particularly useful for Fitzpatrick III–VI skin tones.
Reef Safety
Hawaii, Palau, and several other jurisdictions have banned oxybenzone and octinoxate due to evidence of coral reef damage. This is a legitimate environmental concern regardless of the human safety debate.
Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are considered reef-safe, though nano-particle zinc oxide has some scrutiny here too.
Which to Choose
Choose mineral if: Sensitive or reactive skin, pregnancy, concerned about absorption, swimming in coral reef areas.
Choose chemical if: Daily wear and white cast is a dealbreaker, dark skin tones without access to tinted mineral, physical activity where thick mineral SPF moves.
